How Not to Follow Up After a Job Interview

How Not to Follow Up After a Job InterviewHow Not to Follow Up After a Job InterviewAngry e-mail? Check. Thank-you messages read from scripts? Check. Heres a rogues gallery of what else elend to do.If you can craft an intelligent letter or e-mail to follow up after a job interview, it could be the tipping point that pushes you into the job candidate finalist category. The thank-you note remains one of the most overlooked marketing tools of the job search, said Stephanie Daniel, vice president and group program manager at Keystone Associates, a career-management and transition services consultancy. And then therbeies the not-so-well-crafted message, which can put you, the job seeker, in the loser category. A number of professionals on the receiving end of follow-up e-mail, snailmail, FedEx packages, singing telegrams and other communications shared with us this rogues gallery of infamously inappropriate follow-ups. They caution readers Do not to try this at home. The monologistHeather Kr asna, an expert in public-sector executive jobs, tells of a client who left a long-winded thank-you message on an executives voicemail, directly reading from the thank-you letter she was going to send. This was just weird from the employers perspective and came across as too intense or desperate as well as an inappropriate use of voicemail, Krasna said. She would have been better off had she just mailed a thank-you note. The unprofessional e-mailerCarl Gould, Chief Discovery Officer at geschftliches miteinander mentoring firm CMT Mentors, told us about one job applicant who used a personal e-mail address that referenced a side job as a part-time clown. Needless to say, we filtered that one into the garbage rather quickly, Gould said. The aggressive onesScott R. Gingold, CEO of Powerfeedback, has had follow-ups come via Twitter, LinkedIn, FedEx, snailmail, fax, Web site and at business events. They can get creepy regardless of the medium. His personal rogues gallery featuresBeing invite d to a sporting event by an applicant who doesnt know himHaving female candidates be sexually suggestiveMultiple phone calls after hes told the job seeker not to callDaily e-mail after hes told applicants to stopBeing told in a letter that he reminds an applicant of a deceased relativeThe angry guyKrasna had a horrific experience years ago in which a job candidate, still in school, sent an angry e-mail to a recruiter because he didnt get the job. The job seeker said he was glad he didnt get the job because he wouldnt have wanted to work for the company anyway, Krasna said, and then complimented the recruiter on her figure.Needless to say, this e-mail was forwarded along to the college career center, and the student was informed that he would no longer be allowed to use our career services, she said. It was a while before the colleges reputation would be recovered at that companyThe cranky guyThomas Tuft, an attorney with Tuft Arnold Law Offices, in Maplewood, Minn., once had a law student send a very cranky letter after the firm hadnt responded to his resume submission within a week. Mind you, this was at a time when the firm wasnt hiring. It is not our practice to respond to the dozens of resumes we receive unsolicited, Tuft said. That student will never be hired here. The casually sloppyWhile the preceding are all somewhat spectacularly bad follow-ups, Krasna pointed out that people often hurt their chances simply by not using good grammar and spelling in their communications. Taking the time to write a careful thank-you note that touches on all the reasons you want to work for the organization, as well as how you would be a perfect fit for them, will make you stand fremdartig in a more positive way, she noted.

This author wants to put you to sleep with her writing

This author wants to put you to sleep with her writingThis author wants to put you to sleep with her writingFor most writers, the idea is a nightmare Readers drifting off to their prose, lulled by monotonous passages. But forPhoebe Smith, this phenomenon has turned into an unlikely dream job.The travel writer and journalist has published 15 stories with sleep app Calm after being personally recruited by the companys co-founder.I thought, Should I be really offended that he thinks my writing has the effect of boring people to sleep? Smith told The Guardian.Offensive or not, its true that these days Smiths writing is effectively a substitute for counting sheep. One of her stories, Blue Gold, has more than 4 million views on YouTube and has been listened to approximately 15 million times, according to The Guardian. Words such as slopes, lavender, meandering and sublime fill the oration, performed softly and distinctly by actor Stephen Fry.I kind of flip over what we would normally do w ith writing. Were normally trying to grab people with a dramatic introduction, and work through a narrative arc with every paragraph we write, Smith said. Im flipping that on its head. Her style obviously works. Smith said people tell her they really enjoy her stories but can never make it to the end. Shes curing insomnia and sleep problems with her tired travel stories, and shes even been appointed worlds first sleep storyteller-in-residence at Calm.Smiths writing may be intentionally boring, but her life isnt. This winter, shes going on a sleepy story tour across the United Kingdom and Ireland. And yes, of course she wants her audience to take a nap during her appearance.Normally I would be mortified if anyone went to sleep, Smith said. This time, I wonder how many people I can get to nod off.

Feeld wants to be workplace Tinder, so what could possibly go wrong

Feeld wants to be workplace Tinder, so what could possibly go wrongFeeld wants to be workplace Tinder, so what could possibly go wrongWould you reveal your feelings for a workplace crush?Would you do it through workplace chat? With a new internet bot called Feeld for Slack, checking yes or no to the fraught question of do you like me?will be all too easy.In many places, Slacks instant messaging app has already taken over email as the dominant mode of communication with Feeld, Slack can now be used as a Tinder.Feeld wants us to embrace feelings at work through its Slack integration. Once its installed, you can tell your office crush that you have feelings for them by ing them by name.If your crush reciprocates by ing you back, Feeld will let you both know, so you can one day tell your children you met through a bot.How does Feeld work? All of this will likely work - if you can get it into your company Slack. The ease with which one partie can integrate a dating bot into a companys comm unications, however willing or unwilling those employees may feel about the idea, does raise many human resources red flags.Feelds manifesto doesnote that consent is key, work is work, and Discrimination sucks (and is illegal), so the company is not unaware of the dangers its app is unleashing. Its just forging ahead, regardless. Theres comfort in the formulaic yes/no safety of Feelds bot that treats desire as a problem that can be solved. From Feelds perspective, dating is already so complicated and contradictory - why not save the user time?Feeld founder Dimo Trifonov said he created the app, then-called 3nder, as a way to help peopleexplore polyamory after his girlfriend told him she had sexualfeelings for other women. The app was a way to show her that there are many people like her and like me, he told Fast Company. Now, with Feelds bot, workplaces that use Slack can now bring desire into professional contexts, but does any workplaceactually want this feature?Feeld infiltrates the Washington PostLadders reached out to Feeld to find out if there are any workplaces actually integrating the Feeldbot into their Slacks. We will update when we get a response.Until then, we briefly hada live test case on Monday afternoon duringthe fraught moments that Feeld was activated for The Washington Posts Slack.OnePostsocial media editor made a play on wordsfor the papers new motto, Democracy dies in darkness, joking that Democracy dies in thirstiness.David Farenthold, the Posts Pulitzer-prize-winning investigative reporter had a different take This is why i dont use Slack. Every time I log in, its all GIFs and hormones. The Washington Posts Slack just sent this to the entire newsroom. Democracy dies in thirstiness. pic.twitter.com/2Rj8rNm9zv- S C R E A M PARK ?? (GenePark) May 1, 2017Journalists on Twitter speculated whether it was some random admin who got the request and just OKed it or something more nefarious was at play.Lisa Bonos, the Posts dating editor, later said s he was the culprit who had introduced the bot for about 30 seconds as part of a future story. Trifonov told Bonos that Feeld would work better in startups or zero-hierarchy companies than at the Post. Although Trifonov argued that having a workplace crush is not illegal, acting upon it sometimes can be, and startups are less likelyto have human resources departments. For about 30 seconds, I almost tricked the washingtonpost newsroom into confessing their work crushes to a feeldCo Slack bot. pic.twitter.com/5wmjb5mcmC- Lisa Bonos (lisabonos) May 1, 2017Slack has always been a distractionIn some ways, it makes sense why Feeld would choose Slack as its open platform of choice to test out its dating Lord of the Flies.Slack is already purposefully merging work and play with GIFs, emoji and smartphone notifications that can grab your attention at a moments notice - even when youre at home.As one Atlantic writer warned, Slacksnew emoji status feature is a cutesy way to let your co-workers know what youre doing at all times. Its also one more way for Slack to take up more of your attention on a messaging app and away from your own responsibilities people could conceivably feel pressured to describe what theyre up to at all times, in buchen to explain to their colleagues why they might not immediately reply to a Slack message.Through itsinternationalSlack group, Feeld is indicating its hope for global reach where channels are popping up for specific cities. The conversations in the newly created newyork dating channel are pretty tame so far with individual members sharing their favorite neighborhood restaurants as icebreakers. For now, it feels like a Reddit thread, or a middle school dance floor where boys and girls eye each other from the punch bowl. Time will tell if Feeld moves beyond a quirky novelty of a human resources nightmare.Does anyone who is not a journalist actually want to test this out in an office? If any of you hear of this happening, email me. (Dont S lack me.)

What Questions to Ask During an Interview

What Questions to Ask During an InterviewWhat Questions to Ask During an InterviewWhen youre interviewing for a new job, the hiring manager shouldnt be the only one asking questions. In fact, engaging with a potential employer is critical Being inquisitive can tischset you apart from other candidates by demonstrating your interest in the position and the company. It can also help you learn more about the job responsibilities, the company culture and the potential for advancement. But what kinds of questions are appropriate? Here are some of the best questions job candidates can ask during interviews, based on an OfficeTeam survey of 609 HR managers in the U.S. and Canada. You wont have time to ask all of them, but reviewing them can kick-start your thought process as you prepare for interview day.Show your interest in the positionCan you tell me more about why youre trying to fill this position?Review the job posting carefully and go in explaining that you know the specific skills lis ted, but you want to know more, especially how the skills relate to the role. Asking this question will give you a fuller understanding of the expectations associated with the job and what need(s) it fills for the employer. Is this a new position or am I replacing someone? The answer to this question can help you either way the interviewer responds. If the position is new, you can ask whether you might be responsible for defining the role and it gives you a chance to talk about how exciting that is to you. On the other hand, if the position is a replacement, it gives you an opening for asking about potential turnover issues, which could be a red flag. What colleagues will I be working with? You can use this question to learn more about how responsibilities are shared among gruppe members. You can even ask to meet a few of your potential new coworkers, but this may be a more appropriate request for a second or third interview, when its clear youre a serious candidate for the job.Whats th e biggest challenge the team has faced in the past year?No job is perfect. Ask the interviewer to talk a little bit about the barriers youll face. Will you be dealing with long approval cycles, difficult clients or tight budgets? If youve experienced similar challenges in a previous role, you can share your experiences working through difficult situations. Make sure you have a realistic but positive attitude when discussing your previous experiences. This information w ill be helpful leid only if youre offered the job but also in deciding whether the role is the right fit for you to begin with. What would I be expected to accomplish in my first year? Ask about any goals or benchmarks established for the role. Will you be tasked with launching a new project or initiative? Do you need to improve internal processes? Taking time to ask this type of question clues you in to the level of work expected, and it also shows the employer youre already formulating ways to be successful in the job.How will you evaluate my performance? Performance reviews are standard procedure in virtually any job. How will your manager evaluate your contributions? Ask this ahead of time so expectations are clear from the start. 4 Pleasing Results From Hiring a Career Change Candidate

4 Pleasing Results From Hiring a Career Change Candidate4 Pleasing Results From Hiring a Career Change CandidateResearch says that that people hold an average of 7-15 jobs during their lives. Many of those people not only change jobs, they change careers. A survey conducted by Simply Hired in the fall of 2013 showed that 43 percent of respondents were seeking to change professions. Older workers, who might be overlooked by recruiters as candidates for lower-level positions, are the group most likely to seek a career change. More than half (55 percent) of those between 40 and 49 said they wanted to change careers. Making the leap to another career is a tough decision for many people. They may have to consider a different schedule, lower pay or a different pay structure and more or less travel, among other factors. And often the biggest hurdle is getting hired in a new field in which they have little or no experience. Recruiters often make assumptions about career changers. They wont h ave enough experience with technology. They wont want lower pay. They wont want to work for a younger manager. And so on. Those assumptions can keep recruiters from finding great employees. Here are four reasons you should consider career-changers 1. Work EthicCompared to a recent college grad, a career changer has a proven work ethic. Lets face it they have been showing up to a job they didnt necessarily like every day for years on end. They know how to put in the hours. If they became fairly advanced in their previous field, they know what it means to pay their dues. That means they will show up for you, too. 2. PassionSomeone who has decided to change careers has likely given a lot of thought to what theyre passionate about. Whether thats a passion for the new field itself or changing to a career that supports the lifestyle they desire (more travel, summers off, etc.), they are motivated to make themselves happy. Happy people who are passionate about both what they do and the lif estyle they lead have a positive effect on everyone around them. Passion and enthusiasm are infectious, and thats surely good for morale, if not the bottom line.3. Humility Taking a leap into the unknown of a new career means being willing to learn the ropes and ask a lot of questions. Career changers are less likely to be stuck in old ways of how things were done at their previous job. Instead of making assumptions, the career changer will adapt and learn as they go. People who are willing to say, I dont know, can you please tell me? can be powerful assets to your organization. Asking questions fosters dialogue, which helps break the monotony of every day routine, and engages others in their own work by having them articulate goals and processes. 4. Diversity Innovation requires diverse perspectives. The ability to question the status quo, when combined with years of experience in another field, can inform new processes and products, and enhance efficiency. One study found that a t eam consisting of a combination of inherent (traits that are innate or inherited) and acquired (from past experience) diversity drives innovation in organizations. Companies with both inherited and acquired diversity are 70 percent more likely to capture a new market and 45 percent more likely to improve market share. Adding employees with skills acquired from other fields can bring fresh perspective that will help drive your companys success. When interviewing a career-change seeker, probe the four areas just mentioned. Work ethic Ask them about their commitment to previous jobs.Passion Discover the reasons theyre seeking career change. Did they pursue training or education in the new field? Does the reason theyre seeking the change feel like it comes from the heart, or are they just seeking money or an easy way out? Humility Look for examples of how they approach problem-solving in new situations. Are they willing to know what they dont know and seek out help? Diversity Will they b e comfortable in situations with people who have a lot more experience in a given field? Ask for examples of situations where they had to speak up to a superior or how they approach coming to agreement in situations that have many perspectives. Every organization can use another passionate, humble employee with a strong work ethic and a fresh perspective. They might just not have the experience you expect, so dont overlook those who are seeking a change. Over the next several months well be sharing best learnings and best practices on how to adapt and thrive in this new era of changing careers.
